Opinion: skills matter more than job titles
Why I read the tasks in a job listing before I read the title.
By JobShab editorial team · October 3, 2026 · Editor opinion
- Titles mean different things
- Read the tasks and tools
- Describe what you achieved
In my view, job titles tell you less than they used to, because the same title can mean very different work.
When I read a listing, I look at the tasks and tools first and the title second.
For job seekers, this means describing what you did and achieved, not only your title.
Employers can help too by writing clear listings with real tasks.
This is the editor opinion, and others in the field may disagree.
